Net Neutrality
"Twenty Years of Media Consolidation Has Not Been Good For Our Democracy"
On Bill Moyers' website, there is an interesting article that poses the question about The Internet. I admit to having not been well read about the issue of net neutrality, but after reading our chapters for this week, I find it something that I think we should all be much more concerned with. I would not have even linked the two ideas until I was reading the article titled above and read this subheader:
"Save the Internet: The Next Big Media Battle"
And the paragraphs that followed made me think about it much more.
I had heard of net neutrality and thought it was something much more technical and that it maybe did not apply to me. But this is the thinking that I need to stop, and encourage myself to read or as I like to do in traffic, listen to a podcast about so that I can have a better understanding of what is going on. Saying that we have no control or that whatever is going to happen is going to happen no matter what is a dangerous mindset and I think if we know more we can do better.
Here is a link to the full article if anyone would like to read it

The article is very interesting and somewhat relates to my most recent blog! The bulk of media companies are ran by these elites of our country and that comes with consequences. These corporations are driven to benefit their needs. They share the same views that are filtered through the news. If people accept what is in the media as the truth, then these media companies have a huge impact on society and politics. Check out my blog where I elaborate more on this very idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat Post!
ReplyDeleteI would like to focus on a specific quote from the article and that is"Twenty years later the devastating impact of the legislation is undeniable: About 90 percent of the country’s major media companies are owned by six corporations." I have been trying to relay this to people for so long I probably sound like a broken record. The media we are consuming doesn't just come from anywhere an isn't free reign for anyone. Agenda setting and framing are real concepts and these corporations have one thing on their agenda, $$$.
Now how exactly is net neutrality supposed to exist when a handful pf people own basically everything. That doesn't seem very regulated or fair to me. We really aren't in control and that is really scary.
Hello Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteTo start off what an interesting article you chose. Reading your feedback I thought the your title of “net neutrality” meant something more technical but it just has deeper meaning. I had forgotten that the Telecommunications Act was indeed enacted. In the article they define the meaning of what they meant by ". This has become a major concern for advocates of “net neutrality,” who want to “save the internet,” and ensure it is protected as a public utility with equal access for everybody.” (Corcoran, 2016) It is so true that corporations only agenda is MONEY.
Good post!
