What do we want from the news?

So what everyone is saying is that they are tired of the old media, they don't trust the media networks that we have grown up with. So what can we do about it? How do we create a new mass media that we can trust? The media has become out dated and mostly centered on either entertainment news or local events staying clear of investigative journalism. Deep political divides have ripped us so far apart how can any one media hope to communicate information that appeals to both sides of the divide?

Toward the bottom of the infographic, Jim Lehrer and Brian Williams are listed as tied for the most trusted news anchors. How many people tune in to watch their shows, is it because they seem tame and perhaps boring because they lack some of the theatrics that we look for in our politics now? Like the clip from Network, I like the idea of a clear, honest news anchor. It would be great if an unbiased news anchor could tap into a message that would resonate with an audience that crossed cultural and political lines.

  1. It is sad but it is true! Facebook, Youtube and Twitter have all become apart of our daily lives. When we wake up in the morning or we are getting ready to go out- most of us open up the Youtube app and scroll for a good song. While doing so it is hard to miss videos discussing todays current events. The same goes for Facebook! It is a rare occasion to scroll down our Facebook feeds and not learn of at least one media event.

  2. Hi Jennifer,

I believe that this is a very eye-opening blog post, personally. I do not keep up with the news on a regular basis, but I did think I was pretty informed about today's journalism, journalist and news sources. Although, I must not be as well-informed as I thought I was, because I am guilty of never having heard the names of these two most trusted news anchors before. I believe that this was eye-opening for me because even though I find most the political and news content I read online, I still thought I was doing a good job of trying to find the objective and trustworthy sources, but its seems as this is not the case. It is possible that I may need to do some more research behind the news articles I am reading to make sure they are coming from a trusted source every time.

  3. A lot of information I get today first appears on my apple watch that lays on my wrist. I get a lot of updates for CNN, ESPN, and every media outlet there is. I then click on the link when I get a chance to open my phone. I then read the article and then go straight to my social media to see how people are reacting and what other people are saying. I do not go to a new source and maybe i should start. When i go to social media, I end up retweeting things but before i have to check the sources before i even trust it so maybe I should skip the step of social media and go straight to the source for news. Like you said, I wish that there were unbiased news reporter that can reach everyone and that everyone trusts so that we become united.

  4. I liked this article because I think President Trump does not realize that his attacks on the media are really diminishing his credibility and increasing the medias. The media is an institution in our country and the President has to recognize that. I will be the first to say that the media is corrupt and has to be called out on their biased reporting, but Trump is going about it in the completely wrong way. His use of Twitter to reach the American people directly is good, but he does not have the credibility to be reporting directly to the people on what he is doing. That is what the media is for, to report on the happenings of the government. We cannot trust Trump to give us all the facts surrounding the issues and that is why he will never be able to eliminate the media from our political world.
