Mass Media as Art
After this week's reading about how images are used and what makes up a compelling picture and ad. I found this article interesting. So often we quickly scroll past the pictures in the news that we read that we don't take the time to appreciate the art of the images that are captured within the articles. We are inundated with images regularly.
This is how the exhibit is described "These artists take the work of photojournalists, and turn it into something else. They appropriate images of terrorism, war, natural disasters." (NPR)
Here is an example of the work of Martha Rosler. The juxtaposition of the Vietnam war image on top of the image of the average living room of the 1960's makes the image have more meaning, it brings the war to the home and asks the viewer to think about the war and the violence of war in the setting of their home. "It's very political; it's very aggressive." (NPR)
The article puts an important emphasis on this and other exhibits like this one. Really about all photographs of news and primarily of war and violence saying that: "Through their photographs, these artists are bearing witness for future generations - those who weren't there when the news broke." (NPR)

This was a very interesting read that I really enjoyed. I think photojournalism is a very important aspect of mass media that adds to the news that we read. By showing images of what we are reading about, the reader can really gain a better perspective on what the reality of at all is. Photography is a great way to get political and express an opinion through visuals.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post. Photography is a way to turn heads and use imagery to get an opinion on something out. The first image you shared really makes me think about what it would be like to have the warzone in my backyard, and how I would feel if it was impacting my family directly.
